On Saturday, July 12th, Empower Diaspora proudly joined the AfroLatinidad celebration organized by LatinoLEAD, a vibrant gathering honoring the intersection of African and Afro-Latino identities. Our President, Ian Oundo, offered brief but timely remarks, framing this moment through themes of collaboration, cultural connection, and attachment as survival, highlighting lived experiences of arrival, resilience, and navigating systems that both support and challenge our communities.
"Cultural connection isn’t just heritage, it’s a survival tool. In uncertain times, we lean on each other.” Words from our President Ian Oundo
The event was attended by a diverse group of community members and featured performances from African, Colombian, Afro-Latino, and many other immigrant communities. With vendors from across the spectrum, great food, and a dynamic display of cultures, AfroLatinidad showcased the richness and diversity of Minnesota’s communities in a powerful way.
We believe gatherings like AfroLatinidad are essential in building bridges across communities, creating spaces where cultural pride meets collective action.
We invite you to follow and join Empower Diaspora as we continue this work of uplifting African immigrant voices across Minnesota and beyond
